• In February 2021, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Dr. Robin Geiss as Director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research.
  • Prior to his appointment as Director, Dr. Geiss served as Director of the Glasgow Centre for International Law and Security at the University of Glasgow and as the Swiss Chair of International Humanitarian Law with the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.
  • He is the founding director of the Erasmus Mundus Programme in International Law of Global Security, Peace and Development, a flagship programme of the European Union, spearheading an innovative holistic approach to 21st century legal education.
  • Between 2017-2021, he was a Visiting Professor at the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po in Paris. He is editor of the Oxford Handbook of the International Law of Global Security, the Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law, and has published widely on new technologies.
  • Dr. Geiss was one of the international experts who, under the auspices of the Tallinn-based NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, drafted the “Tallinn Manual”, which investigates how international law applies to cyber warfare.
  • Between 2004-2005 and 2007-2010, he worked as a Legal Adviser for the ICRC in Geneva and New York, and as an ICRC delegate to the UN Human Rights Council.
  • Dr. Geiss studied international law at the University of Edinburgh and graduated from the University of Kiel with a degree in Law. In 2003, he completed a PhD in Law on the topic of “Failed States”. In 2004, he completed an LL.M. in International Legal Studies at New York University.
  • Dr. Geiss was born on 8 November 1974 in Bielefeld, Germany. He is married, with two daughters and one son.
